Puerto Rico, just a quick flight from the East Coast and southern states but feels worlds away with its gentle azure water, palm trees, and historic sites that date back to the 16th century. Plus, passports are not required for US visitors.
Surrounded by miles of idyllic beaches and verdant mountains and rainforest, Puerto Rico is an outdoor lover's dream. San Juan, the bustling capital, also has incredible music venues, a cobblestone historic district, brilliant street art, and a food and cocktail scene that rivals most metropolitan cities. Beach lovers flock to Vieques, Rincon, and Culebra, and the island is the birthplace of the pina colada.
After visiting Puerto Rico for years and hopping from coast to coast and hotel to hotel, I've developed strong opinions about where to stay. The following represents the best Puerto Rico hotels for a fun-filled family vacation, a romantic retreat, or a posh enclave fit for the Rockefellers that once vacationed here.

The Dreamcatcher
Book The Dreamcatcher
Category: Budget
Location: San Juan
Typical starting/peak prices: $95/$275
Best for: Couples, solo travelers, yoga lovers
On-site amenities: Communal kitchens, yoga classes, nearby beach, breakfast
Pros: This eco-friendly hotel is well-suited to the laid-back traveler who wants a friendly youth hostel vibe but updated for adults.
Cons: Some rooms have communal bathrooms, while others have private bathrooms that are not en suite.
This bohemian chic charmer is like a little slice of Tulum in San Juan. There are nine jewel-colored rooms and three suites, which all have a unique style of their own, including a variety of bathroom options (private indoor, private outdoor, ensuite, down the hall), outdoor space, hammocks, and color schemes. The rooms are homey and comfortable, decorated with assorted art and antiques, but nothing too precious to make guests worry about jostling them. Think midcentury modern chairs next to Buddha statues with handmade wall hangings and a gentle whiff of incense in the air.
The relaxing vibes extend to the yoga and meditation classes, a Zen lounge, and the sound of the water flowing in the fountain near the communal kitchens. The heart of the hotel is the laidback dining area where a superb brunch is served daily. After a healthy vegetarian breakfast, grab a beach chair from the front desk and take a quick five-minute walk to Ocean Park Beach.
El Blok Hotel
Book El Blok Hotel
Category: Boutique
Location: Vieques
Typical starting/peak prices: $140/$410
Best for: Couples, design enthusiasts, beachgoers
On-site amenities: Rooftop, restaurants, bar
Pros: This architecturally interesting hotel is across the street from one of Vieques' most picturesque beaches. Great bar and dining options make El Blok a peaceful escape from the world.
Cons: Minimalism isn't for everyone, so if you prefer a hotel with TVs and big closets, you'll want to consider somewhere else. It's also worth noting that the hotel is adults-only, so families will need to stay elsewhere.
Vieques is a nature-filled island 13 miles off the eastern tip of the main island of Puerto Rico and just a quick flight from San Juan. While most beach resorts lean into their surroundings with airy architecture and natural elements, El Blok practically rebukes Mother Nature, standing like a concrete sentinel above the ocean, making for a delightful contrast and visual treat. The concrete exterior is offset by gorgeous curving lines and a delicate latticework overlaying the building.
Despite the stark exterior, the hotel is warm and welcoming, filled with local art and woodwork, and bright Spanish tiling. Each room of this adults-only hotel is different, but all have a similar aesthetic of washed concrete walls, understated furnishings, and bright pops of color like turquoise bed frames, and all have private terraces and rain showers. For better or worse, there are no televisions or phones in the rooms.
There is also an incredible rooftop bar, as well as a street-level bar that brings in locals. There's a plunge pool on the roof, but the beach is right across the street. The staff is more than happy to rent you a bike, explain local coffee culture, or arrange excursions.

Hix Island House
Book the Hix Island House
Category: Boutique
Location: Vieques
Typical starting/peak prices: $155/$470
Best for: Couples, adult groups
On-site amenities: Pool, gardens
Pros: This hotel is gorgeous, eco-friendly, and architecturally unique.
Cons: The property's minimalist decor, DIY meals, lack of tech, and the fact that no kids under 14 are allowed mean the hotel is not for everyone.
Hix Island House doesn't look like your typical beach resort. It's comprised of five concrete buildings of varying geometric shapes that are perched on a hilltop overlooking Vieques.
The stunning wabi-sabi-inspired compound was designed by Canadian architect John Hix and each of the casas and their 19 loft rooms offer variations on a theme of minimalist elegance offset by natural beauty.
The hotel is also eco-friendly and features the Casa Solaris, a fully solar-powered building. There are no phones or TVs, and there isn't a restaurant, but each loft comes with a stocked kitchen. There are also 13 acres of orchards and gardens and a gorgeous pool nestled in the hills. If you want to venture out, Vieques' beaches are only minutes away.
El Pretexto
Book the El Pretexto
Category: Farm stay
Location: Cayey
Typical starting/peak prices: $160/$180
Best for: Foodies, couples, hikers
On-site amenities: Fire pit, breakfast, farm
Pros: This hotel is an idyllic stopover that is a nice pick for food lovers and adventurers.
Cons: The farm is isolated, so it is best for folks who want to stay put and stay in for a night or two.
Agritourism gets an island upgrade at El Pretexto in central-southeast Puerto Rico. This adults-only B&B is also a farm stay for a peaceful retreat surrounded by fruit trees and vegetable beds that are cooled by the mountain breeze.
The farm's three wooden villas, which can be divided into five rooms, are rustic but spacious with giant windows to admire the surroundings, comfortable beds, and paintings created by the owner. There are no televisions in the rooms, but plenty of board games keep guests entertained, and nature walks, yoga classes, and a fire pit are all on offer.
The highlight is the food thanks to incredibly fresh ingredients and a rotating line-up of chefs stepping into the kitchens of the island's first farm lodge. It's an idyllic stopover for those traveling along the 167-mile La Ruta Panorámica Luis Muñoz Marín, a.k.a., the Panoramic Route that traverses the mountains of Puerto Rico.

Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort
Book the Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort
Category: Mid-range
Location: Ponce
Typical starting/peak prices: $193/$265
Best for: Families, golfers, corporate travelers
On-site amenities: Beach, casino, golf, tennis, 2 pools, conferences, restaurant
Pros: A hotel with something for every traveler, including a variety of activities and offerings both on and off the property.
Cons: Visitors may need to rent a car for activities outside the hotel.
While San Juan gets most of the attention, Ponce is Puerto Rico's second-largest city and home to one of the island's classic resorts, the Hilton Ponce Golf & Casino Resort.
The hotel feels like a traditional Hilton with comfortable rooms with flat-screen TVs, balconies, large bathrooms stocked with toiletries, in-room Wi-Fi, and large desks. There are also enormous conference and meeting rooms that draw regular business travel.
While the resort has a whopping 255 rooms and hosts conferences and events, it doesn't feel overcrowded thanks to a spacious footprint with two massive pools, a hot tub, 27-hole golf course, mini-golf course, play area, tennis courts, an inviting beach just steps away, and one of the largest casinos in Puerto Rico.
Plus, Ponce's museums, art galleries, historic square, and famous La Guancha boardwalk are just a short drive away.

El Conquistador Resort, Fajardo
Book El Conquistador Resort, Fajardo
Category: Luxury
Location: Fajardo
Typical starting/peak prices: $209/$499
Best for: Families, couples, honeymooners
On-site amenities: Waterpark, Arthur Hills golf course, restaurants, spa
Pros: This is a romantic hotel that also works for the whole family.
Cons: Returning guests will miss the hotel's private island as it is being rebuilt
The El Conquistador was a Puerto Rico institution with nearly a thousand hotel rooms spread out over five villages all perched on a 300-foot cliff over the ocean with a private island for guests to enjoy. Then came Hurricane Maria and heavy damage to the hotel and its island.
Now, it is reopening albeit as a slightly smaller version with 230 rooms, all beachy, modern, and bright, with spacious bathrooms. You won't want to spend too much time in your room, though, since the hotel is reopening its golf course, five restaurants, and famous water park that includes a lazy river, infinity pool, speed slides, and kiddie pools.
If you book for late summer 2021, the resort's private Palomino Island is slated to reopen too.
Hacienda Tamarindo
Book the Hacienda Tamarindo
Category: Boutique
Location: Vieques
Typical starting/peak prices: $237/$495
Best for: Couples, solo travelers, nature lovers
On-site amenities: Breakfast, library, pool
Pros: This hotel makes it easy to access many of Vieques' natural wonders.
Cons: There are limited food and beverage options, which may frustrate some guests.
Overlooking the city of Esperanza on Vieques, Hacienda Tamarindo offers easy access to the island's natural attractions. Each of the 17 guest rooms is unique and while the quirky collection of art, antiques, and collectibles are fun, catching a glimpse of the island's wild horses out the window is magical.
The Hacienda takes its role as a boutique bed and breakfast very seriously, putting out an incredible spread for guests to enjoy. They also put together a box lunch for folks heading out to snorkel at Las Rompeolas, or spending the day at Sun Bay.
Spend your days by the pool, grab a book from the hotel library, chill out in a hammock on the lush grounds, or take advantage of the hotel's location near the Caribbean's largest nature preserve. The magic of Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world, is close by.

Hotel El Convento
Book the Hotel El Convento
Category: Mid-range
Location: Old San Juan
Typical starting/peak prices: $274/$349
Best for: Couples, history lovers, solo travelers
On-site amenities: Restaurant, bar, fitness center
Pros: This historic hotel is right in the heart of Old San Juan.
Cons: The beach is not very close.
It's hard to miss the bright yellow Hotel El Convento in Old San Juan, which has been a landmark of the city since the 17th century.
While it has been a hotel since 1962 (Gloria Vanderbilt was its very first guest), the Spanish Colonial building maintains some of the spirit of its former life as the Carmelite convent, under which it operated until 1903.
Stepping off the cobbled streets of Old San Juan and through the towering arched doors, it's hard not to feel a bit awed. The mahogany-beamed ceilings, antique furnishings, and deep history add to the reverential feelings.
While the building is 400 years old, the rooms and suites are all tastefully modern and there's Wi-Fi and a plunge pool on the roof. Eating in the hotel's courtyard is serene and a welcome respite from the busy streets outside the convent walls.
While El Convento doesn't have a beach, the hotel does give guests access via a nearby resort, meaning there's no reason to skimp on history or beach time.

Caribe Hilton
Book the Caribe Hilton
Category: Mid-range
Location: San Juan
Typical starting/peak prices: $293/$480
Best for: Families, couples, Hilton loyalists
On-site amenities: Restaurant, bars, pool, beach
Pros: This Hilton has all the amenities of a remote resort while still in close proximity to San Juan's attractions.
Cons: You'll need to grab a ride — or be prepared to hoof it — to take in San Juan's sites.
Puerto Rico is the birthplace of the pina colada and there is no better place to sip one than at the Caribar at the Caribe Hilton where the famous cocktail was created by bartender Ramon "Monchito" Marrero back in 1954.
History (and cocktails) aren't the only thing to love about Caribe Hotel, though. The rooms are done up in soothing color schemes with the occasional pop of color, simple contemporary furnishings, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs. Families may opt for one- or two-bedroom suites with kitchenettes and living and dining areas.
The hotel is perfectly situated between Old San Juan and the Condado neighborhood but doesn't feel urban thanks to its isolated location on a green peninsula jutting out into the ocean. There is an oceanfront pool, hammocks, gardens, and activities hosted on-site as well.

Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort
Book the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort
Category: Mid-range
Location: Rio Grande
Typical starting/peak prices: $303/$599
Best for: Families, conference attendees, couples, beachgoers
On-site amenities: Golf, tennis, pools, casino, spa, beach, restaurants, bars, casino
Pros: This hotel is designed for fun with activities for the entire family and has a great beachfront location.
Cons: If you want to head into town, or anywhere off the hotel property, you'll need to take a car as the location is fairly remote.
It's hard to miss the massive 600-room Rio Mar Beach Resort from Wyndham, which sprawls over 500 acres of impressive grounds that include two championship golf courses, 13 tennis courts, and three pools, including ones just for kids and one for adults. The hotel also faces a stunning wide beach with full beach service, making this a great option for families or multi-generational trips.
The hotel has several on-site restaurants and bars, a casino, a spa, and plenty of activities, and the spacious rooms are recently refurbished with patios or balconies, and many have gorgeous views of the ocean or rainforest. If you have a rental car, the hotel is near both the Carabali Rainforest Park and El Yunque National Forest for easy day trips.

Fairmont El San Juan
Book the Fairmont El San Juan
Category: Luxury
Location: San Juan
Typical starting/peak prices: $305/$765
Best for: Families, beachgoers
On-site amenities: Nightclub, pools, beaches, restaurants, bars
Pros: This elegant hotel is in a secluded location, but the sites of San Juan are still easily accessible.
Cons: Those looking for a low-key stay or casual beachy vibes may prefer a less historical property.
When the El San Juan first opened its doors in 1958, the idea was to make a glamourous destination for sophisticated jet setters — and they succeeded. The hotel has a dramatic lobby anchored by an enormous chandelier that lends the place an aura of classic glamour that was only emboldened by a recent $65 million renovation.
While the hotel is sophisticated, it is very much a beach resort, so don't worry about tracking in sand or bringing the kids to the many pools. The rooms are spacious, the beds are comfortable, and there are mini-fridges for snack storage. If you really want to splurge, opt for one of the suites with a Steinway piano or a terrace.
While Nat King Cole and Sammy Davis Jr. may no longer be playing at the nightclub, there are plenty of entertainment options, including an on-site dance club and more bars and restaurants than you could visit on a weekend.

Royal Isabela
Book the Royal Isabela
Category: Luxury
Locale: Isabela
Typical starting/peak prices: $350/$550
Best for: Families, couples, nature lovers, golfers
On-site amenities: Golf, tennis, pools, hiking, beach, restaurant
Pros: An eco-friendly luxury hotel ideal for people looking for a tropical escape.
Cons: The hotel is far from the city sights and hotspots
Sprawling over 426 oceanfront acres in the northwest corner of the island, the Royal Isabela is an eco-luxury resort, nature reserve, golf course, and dark sky preserve in one. Founded in 2012, the resort overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and El Pastillo Beach and incorporates those natural surroundings into their operation. The golf course is sustainably maintained, an on-site organic farm supplies the resort's restaurant, while recycled rainwater keeps things green, and a conservation trust ensures things will remain the same forever.
Guests stay in casitas, which are private villas with plenty of space to sprawl out, with patios and plunge pools. In addition to the allure of the beach and the possibility of a humpback whale or sea turtle sighting, the resort has swimming pools, tennis, a library, and hiking trails where you can spot all sorts of wildlife.
Condado Vanderbilt Hotel
Book the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel
Category: Luxury
Location: San Juan
Typical starting/peak prices: $450/$750
Best for: Families, couples, history lovers
On-site amenities: 4 pools, spa, fitness center, beach, restaurant
Pros: This luxury hotel is steeped in history, but updated for modern travelers thanks to a fitness center, multiple pools, and a spa, all in a prime beach location.
Cons: This is not the place to stay if you're looking for a laidback beach hotel where you can track sand into the lobby. That said, the staff is too polite to say anything about it.
When a Vanderbilt commissions a hotel, you know it's going to be a luxurious stay that lives up to the family name. The Condado Vanderbilt Hotel, envisioned by railroad tycoon Frederick William Vanderbilt in 1917, and brought to life by the architects behind Manhattan's Grand Central Station, does not disappoint.
While the hotel may not look exactly the way it did when Bob Hope and FDR once stayed here, it has been restored to its sophisticated roots complete with porters and butlers. The stunning Spanish Revival style house has interiors so gorgeous they rival the ocean view and the tray ceilings and iron staircase in the lobby alone are worth Instagramming.
Rooms in the original building reflect old-world elegance with soft color schemes, dark wood furnishings, European linen, and French doors. Tower rooms are lighter, airier, and more modern, but with a similar look and feel. Most rooms have ocean views, but if that's important, it's worth confirming at check-in.
The hotel also has four outdoor swimming pools, the island's only Turkish bath, and zippy Wi-Fi that is included in the resort fee. The hotel is right on the ocean but is also centrally located near San Juan's restaurants, shopping, and attractions.
COVID-19 procedures are available here.
The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort
Book The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort
Category: Luxury
Location: Rio Grande
Typical starting/peak prices: $899/$1,549
Best for: Honeymooners, couples, Marriott loyalists
On-site amenities: Tennis, kayaks, bikes, pools, beaches, signature butler service, restaurants, pools, spa
Pros: This is the height of beachfront luxury with close proximity to the rainforest and all its wonders. The amenities here are exceptional.
Cons: The resort fee is pricey considering the already high room rate.
Old San Juan is just 30 minutes away, but this stunning resort feels like a world of its own. Set on a former coconut plantation, the hotel is flanked by the ocean on one side and verdant nature on the other.
Sip carefully crafted cocktails in your poolside cabana and when you're ready for a change, move to another pool or grab a beach chair facing the ocean. The resort's 483 acres of property offers two miles of private beachfront and two bird sanctuaries earning it a certified Gold Audubon Signature Sanctuary.
Bright airy rooms feature elegant furnishings, dreamy garden or ocean views, and are tucked amid lushly lined meandering paths. Three restaurants mean plenty of variety in your dining options and biking, hiking, and jogging trails crisscross the terrain, while kayaking, tennis, and surfing keep guests entertained. It's a splurge, but one you will most likely never forget.

Location: Dorado
Typical starting/peak prices: $2,100/$2,600
Best for: Honeymooners, bucket list travelers, couples, Marriott loyalists
On-site amenities: Golf, pools, water park, activities, restaurants, spa, beach
Pros: This is a stunning hotel that comes with plenty of pampering, loads of luxuries, and a true love of nature.
Cons: It's a splurge even for people who can afford one.
What started out as a 1,400-acre pineapple and grapefruit plantation was first turned into a hotel by Laurance S. Rockefeller back in 1958. Since 2012 this hotel has been part of the Ritz-Carlton portfolio and received a massive renovation post Hurricane Maria. The result is a jaw-droppingly lavish, environmentally-minded resort and nature reserve for those willing to splurge.
The 115 spacious rooms are all beachfront and come with floor-to-ceiling glass doors that offer stunning views. Gardens surround outdoor showers and deep soaking tubs and rooms also have either spacious balconies or private plunge pools.
While it's hard to leave the luxurious rooms, the resort has two golf courses, an entire aquatic playground with slides, pools, and a lazy river, and a slate of activities including kitesurfing, hiking, biking, surfing, and paddleboarding. FAQ: Puerto Rico hotels
Where is Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico is an island located approximately 1,000 miles southeast of Miami, near the Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands between the Caribbean and Atlantic Oceans.
It's about a two-and-half-hour flight from Florida or about four hours from New York City. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so U.S. citizens do not need a passport to enter.
Where should I stay in Puerto Rico?
If you want to stay somewhere that highlights island culture and history, head to San Juan. This is where many of the hotels are located, near museums, historic sites, restaurants, shopping, and art. There are also great beaches, like Condado or nearby Isla Verde, so visitors to San Juan don't need to choose between beach or city.
For a true beach break, head outside the city to beaches in Isabela, Rio Grande, or Ponce. Alternatively, hop a quick flight to Vieques, an island retreat 13 miles off the eastern tip of the main island. There are wild horses that run across white sand beaches, bioluminescent bays that light up the night, and the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, which offers incredible encounters with nature.
What is there to do in Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico is an idyllic island with all the accompanying activities you'd expect from a tropical destination. Hike to see the waterfalls in El Yunque National Forest, trek through Guánica's Dry Forest, kayak through a bioluminescent lagoon in Fajardo, surf the waves of Rincón, or go sailing, snorkeling, fishing, or simply lie on the beach and stare at the waves.
The historic city of San Juan boasts colorful Spanish colonial buildings and centuries-old fortresses of El Morro and La Fortaleza. There are rum tastings, street art tours, an exploding culinary and cocktail scene, great shopping, and museums for art lovers of all stripes.
Are Puerto Rico hotels expensive?
The island has been a favorite retreat for Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, and celebrities since the 1940s, so there are definitely higher-end luxury picks reflected on our list. But despite Puerto Rico's popularity with the well-heeled crowd, you don't need to be a millionaire to vacation here. There are hotels for travelers of every budget, and all hotels can be more affordable in the off-season of summer, fall, and even early spring.
When is a good time to visit Puerto Rico?
Crowds descend in the winter, particularly around the holidays, so expect to see the peak prices we've listed for most hotels. The island has warm weather all year though, so there's no reason to limit yourself to the high season. Although it is worth noting that hurricane season runs from June to November.
What are the best hotels near Old San Juan?
El Convento is a historic hotel in the heart of Old San Juan. Other nearby options include the Caribe Hilton and the Dreamcatcher.
Which hotels are romantic?
It's hard to go wrong with the St. Regis Bahia Beach when you're angling for romance, while the private casitas at the Royal Isabela offer plenty of space to be alone together.

The Wyndham Rio Grande, Hilton Ponce, Caribe Hilton, and El Conquistador all go out of their way to make families feel welcome and offer extensive activities.

Is it safe to stay in a hotel?
The CDC says it is safe to travel domestically if you are fully vaccinated, and experts we spoke to agree that in most cases, hotels are safe. Still, if you are unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, or unsure about traveling, it is always best to assess your own level of risk while following CDC, WHO, and other reputable organizations' safety guidelines.
What are Puerto Rico travel restrictions?
If you're traveling to Puerto Rico from the U.S., you do not need to quarantine or get tested upon your arrival, if you're fully vaccinated. However, all visitors need to fill out a Travel Declaration Form on the Puerto Rico Health Department's online portal, which produces a QR code required to proceed. Fully vaccinated travelers need to upload a photo of their official Vaccination Card through the online portal.
International and non-vaccinated travelers must upload a negative PCR molecular or antigen COVID-19 test result to the portal. Tests must be taken within 72 hours of arrival. Otherwise, the traveler must take either a PCR molecular or antigen COVID-19 test on the island, within 48 hours of arrival, or receive a $300 fine. You can also get a test at the airport for $110. If the uploaded result is negative, the quarantine is lifted. If the result is positive, the person must isolate and follow the local isolation protocol at his/her own expense.
